Jane Twiddum’s voice sounded, to the girl puppet, like light pouring down.

“Oh, I don’t care that you went.

I don’t care at all.

I’ll make my own way,

for violets are only flowers,

and flowers last only,

flowers don’t last,

flowers last

only a day.”

The girl puppet listened, entranced.

Now she had two songs to sing — the rag- and-bone man’s and Jane Twiddum’s.

The girl thought about singing the songs for the king and the boy and the owl and the wolf when they were all together again.

“We will be together again,” the girl whis-pered to herself. “I believe it. I do believe it. We will be together, and I will sing.”
